It seems there is no end to the swagger that is Karl Lagerfeld. That is probably why he designs for the French fashion house, CHANEL, and many other super-luxury brands. Famous for his designs and photography campaigns, Lagerfeld is currently conquering the world of film direction. In the past two months, four works by him have surfaced and are commanding a lot of attention. I have compiled all four here for my (and your) enjoyment.

I am pretty excited to see the final 10 contestants of this contest. Here is some info straight from the Mango Fashion Awards website:

4th Edition “el Botón”

MANGO FASHION AWARDS

After the success obtained in the last editions, “el Botón”-MANGO Fashion Awards, whose aim is encouraging and promoting the International projection of young fashion talents, is launching its 4th edition with the support of five international design schools of great prestige in Europe and the online platform Not Just a Label.

In the previous editions the jury of “el Botón” counted on two exceptional presidents, the renowned designers Valentino and Oscar de la Renta. On 20 October, the famous designer, Jean Paul Gaultier, the President of the Jury of the 3rd edition of the contest, announced the name of the absolute winner during the Final Ceremony held in the MNAC of Barcelona.

The new registration period for the 4th edition will commence on 15 February and designers will have until the 31 July to present their applications. In mid-November the jury, made up of representatives of MANGO and five prestigious international design schools will select the 10 finalists that will pass to the second step of the contest.

In this campaign, MANGO has set the emerging talents a provocative challenge: “create your own revolution”, a call to arms inviting them to become real revolutionaries, with a chance to change fashion, shapes, colours and trends… The context of the spot and the graphic exude an air of ambiguity. They were created by the renowned director and photographer Eugenio Recuenco and star Andrej Pejic, one of the top new modelling talents on the global fashion scene.

Andrej Pejic, an exceptional model in highest demand among the greatest designers of the fashion world is in fact a man, and it is this ambiguity that has made him the poster boy of the major fashion labels and the world’s biggest publishing houses.

You know what’s crazy, not only is that model a guy, he looks like he hasn’t eaten anything in 5 years!!! Either way, fashion is exciting sometimes.

M/M (Paris) release this press release a couple days ago. Direct from M/M (Paris):

“Last Fall, Kanye West asked M/M (Paris) to design the album packaging for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. West had commissioned George Condo to create a series of paintings featuring the characters who populate his musical fantasies.

During the creative process, M/M (Paris) created a series of hand drawn ornamented frames to adorn the powerful and iconic Condo paintings.

Playing with the many possibilities of combing the paintings and frames, M/M (Paris) and Kanye West wanted to find a luxurious expression of their creative efforts - and decided to use the most striking combinations and transform them into voluptuous silk scarves.

The results are now being released jointly by M/M (Paris) and Kanye West as a collection of five full color scarves made of 100% silk twill.

Each of the five scarves features one of the album covers painted by George Condo embedded in an intricate gold frame with hand drawn lettering by M/M (Paris).

The combination of this luxurious visula language over the traditional Twill de Soie is the ultimate celebration of the magically ornamented sounds of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Each scarf is produced in a limited edition of 100 units. The first half edition is available through M/M (Paris)’s website, and at selected retailers.”

These will be available starting Monday, May 9th.

I don’t when Ksubi released their short video directed by Aussie, Daniel Askill for their denim campaign titled “Kolors,” but it seems to be all over the net. What’s strange to me is, NO ONE TALKS ABOUT THE FORD FALCON XD! I dunno… I like fashion, but I <3 cars and that was the first thing that popped out to me. At 2:14 you can get a glimpse of the 1 of 3 Falcons that is modified (it’s the one on the left). The other 2 are whatevs, but that one is sick. Bambi Northwood-Blythe at 0:14 of the video ain’t too shabby either. You can read a nice interview with Daniel Askill about the video at Dazed Digital.

Nice video btw… it looks like video is going to be the new look-book lol.

Big K.R.I.T. (King Remembered In Time) is going to be a superstar. Last year, hip-hop reinvigorated my thirst with new and exciting artist releases. B.o.B., J. Cole, Wale and Kid Cudi were the main freshman of 2010 with a side jab from Odd Future, but this year so far has all been Big K.R.I.T.

Another rapper/producer is taking the stage and it seems that hip-hop artists are becoming more talented and refining this genre from the trash it was for a while. I am going to say with confidence that Big K.R.I.T.’s mixtape/free album Returnof4eva is the best hip-hop release of 2011 so far, although I was really hoping that Detox would drop on 4.20.

korean indie... hallyu is official

It’s been a while since my last post. Life has been busy. Whatever.

As I get back on track to updating my personal diary of things that interest me, I tell myself that some things really are intriguing. Hallyu, also known as the Korean Wave, is sweeping across Asia. South Korean pop-culture is dominating Asian music, television and movies. Originally a term coined by Chinese journalists, Hallyu is creating a movement within South Korea that is absolutely disgusting. Don’t get me wrong. I love me some Korean video girls just like the rest of ‘em. I mean, honestly, who can deny 9 girls dancing to the formula that is mainstream pop music…SNSD anyone?

In all seriousness, to every action there is a reaction. And in South Korea, the reaction to plastic, template-driven pop groups is Korean Indie (aka K-Indie). Although considered part of Hallyu, K-Indie is a movement that started back in the 80’s. Recently the indie bands of South Korea have been gaining so much momentum that they are reaching heights Korean mainstream bands only hope to achieve…”western recognition.” Apollo 18 is one of those bands. They recently were invited to perform at SXSW and have been steamrolling the indie scene.

Along with other up-and-coming bands as well as long-time established artists from the K-Indie scene, I am hoping some more gems break through.

As casting reports have been confirmed for the third installment of Christopher Nolan’s vision of Batman, my anticipation for the film keeps growing. Previous to Nolan’s rendition of the superhero, I was a die-hard believer that the Tim Burton and Michael Keaton combo would be the end-all-be-all version of the hero. I don’t know if any of the current actors can surpass Burton’s crew, but I think we can all agree that somehow Heath Ledger was able to one-up an amazing performance by Jack Nicholson. That said, the current line-up for The Dark Knight Rises is as follows:

Christian Bale - Bruce Wayne / Batman (Bale should win best supporting actor this year, but he needs to do something about that voice when playing Batman, seriously.)

Anne Hathaway - Selina Kyle / Catwoman (I hope this works.)

Tom Hardy - Bane (Great choice. He was amazing in Bronson.)

Morgan Freeman - Lucius Fox (Can’t go wrong with the voice for everything.)

Gary Oldman - Jim Goldman (He is under-appreciated.)

Michael Caine - Alfred (Swagger.)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Unknown (Out-shined DiCaprio in Inception… I can’t wait to see more from him.)

Marion Cotillard - Unknown (I am a super fan of her.)

On a side note, I am also anticipating Tim Burton’s adaptation of the supernatural 1960’s soap opera, Dark Shadows. Teaming back up with Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer, I hope we don’t have a revisit of Sweeney Todd.

It was rumored May 26th of last year that two of my favorite artists, Jack White and Jay-Z, had hit the studio together to record Ray Bans with Amy Winehouse in the mix as well. It was later revealed that the photos were from Glastonbury in 2008 and that the set of photos were taken at different times (as proven by Jack White’s hair). Still, I wish this was true instead of us getting a fail of a song from Jermaine Dupri’s dumb ass technoish~ cover of Seven Nation Army. At least we have pictures of what could have been…

Adele’s sophomore album 21 is set to be released 2.22.11. If you are lucky like me (muhahaha), you have already heard this album and know that it is a definite purchase. A little more pop than Adele’s first album, 19, 21 has no problems strengthening Adele’s staying power.
